Toklat’s modern story began in 1976, when Jim Mreen purchased Toklat Originals and started selling CoolBack® Western saddle pads. The company soon expanded with additional pad lines such as WoolBack® and Medallion®, growing into a major saddle pad manufacturer serving English, Western, and endurance riders.
Over the decades, Toklat has continued to grow from its Pacific Northwest roots into a broad equestrian company known for saddle pads, tack, bitting solutions, riding apparel, horse care products, and stable equipment. The company remains family owned and is headquartered in Wilsonville, Oregon, with many products still produced in the USA.
Product development remains closely tied to the equestrian community. Toklat works with riders, trainers, horse experts, and product designers, and says its products are tested before release to ensure they meet the brand’s standards for quality and performance. That rider-driven approach has helped Toklat build long-standing trust across multiple disciplines.
Even the Toklat name reflects the brand’s connection to the outdoors. It comes from the Toklat River and region in Alaska’s Denali National Park, a name derived from the Tanana language and associated with the area’s distinctive glacial waters.
